TWELVE

Tru ran his hand along an edge of the rock that pinned him. Its sharp, jagged edge confirmed his suspicions that this rock had been cut.

He recalled the moment before he felt his rope slip. There had been a grinding sound. At the time, he had thought it was the cave shifting, but now he knew without a doubt that someone had been up there.

And if his gun had been thrown back to him, then that someone must have Danika.

“I failed her,” he said aloud and dropped his forehead to the rock in front of him and let its coolness soothe the nausea rolling in him. “God be with her. Keep her safe. Do what I couldn’t do.”

The exhaustion of guilt overtook him. His attempts to free himself had sapped every drop of energy in him. He felt sleep creeping in and desired nothing but to close his eyes and enter the oblivion. Sleep would be better than the delirious thoughts his choices were bringing on.

But then, he deserved the punishment for leading Danika right into danger.

In his many quests through dark underground tunnels, and tight claustrophobic spaces, he’d seen many people turn to delirium. The mind had a way of shutting down when it couldn’t process the bleak reality of where it was any longer; when mind over matter didn’t work anymore, and the matter took over.

So this was what that hopelessness felt like.

Tru knew all about misery, grief and anger from the loss of Melinda and his older brother’s accident ten years ago, but he had never experienced the feeling of hopelessness over the consequences of his actions. With Melinda he had felt guilty about allowing her to take the lead, but with Danika, he had delivered her right into danger. The feeling of knowing he could never go back and fix what he had done only made him want to crawl under this rock and never come out.

At this point his leg had gone numb. He figured circulation was being cut off to it and wondered if that would cause permanent damage. Not that it mattered, if he was never getting out of there.

He dropped his head back against the wall and closed his eyes. He tried to envision Danika making an escape from her captor. She had the strength. He’d seen it. He imagined her fighting against the faceless man. He imagined her running back to him, and together they would take down that crime ring.

Tru huffed at the absurdity. More like insanity as he slipped into delirium.

“Tru! I’m coming for you. I’m almost there!”

He groaned and let his head fall to his shoulder. Images of her filled his mind and strangely brought him peace. How could this woman just come into his life and take over his mind?

He didn’t care. He liked her there. Somehow, Danika Lewis broke through his hard shell, and he was better for having known her.

A new kind of darkness that went beyond the dark cave seeped into his state of consciousness like a growing ink spill.
